Craft Lager by Cotswold Lakes Brew Co.
4.7% ABV
Our Cotswold Craft Lager is crisp, refreshing and delicately hopped, but full of flavour.
A careful blend of British malts combined with classic East Kent Goldings hops and locally-sourced, surplus fresh bread to make a clean-tasting, modern beer.
Base malt is Maris Otter Extra Pale, but also contains Munich malt (both British grown) and a small amount of wheat. Bread content is a mix of white and sour dough for this recipe. Hops are East Kent Goldings both for bittering and aroma
BEER STORY
Probably the most popular beer style on the planet, the humble lager has a long and varied history. Hailing from northern Europe, in what is now Germany and Austria, lager beers represent a significant evolution of brewing history.
If you’re interested in the technical stuff, our Cotswold Craft Lager is inspired by a classic German beer. Kölsch is a hybrid beer; fermented at warm temperatures like an ale, then cold-conditioned like a lager. The result is a clean, crisp beer that’s delicately hopped and far tastier than the dull and uninspiring lagers you’ll find at your local!
An overlooked – and arguably trivial – consequence of Brexit means that we could’ve, if we’d chosen, called this our Cotswold Craft Kölsch. Like Champagne from France or Gouda from Holland, Kölsch has Protected Geographical Indication in the EU, meaning that a “true Kölsch” must be made within 50km of Cologne. Outside of the EU, the PGI status is rarely recognised.
Call us sticklers, pedants or beer snobs, but this is our version of a Kölsch-style beer rather than a clone so we’ve called it our Cotswold Craft Lager.
Beer lover with a sustainable heart? Cotswold Lakes Brew Co.’s food waste-fighting beers will win you over with their equally excellent flavours and eco-friendly ethos.
The recipe behind each of their brews (that’s a blonde, bitter, porter, lager, pale ale and cold-brew coffee stout, fyi) includes a special ingredient: loaves of surplus bread.
Cotswold Lakes Brew Co. saves this bread from local Cotswold businesses, as part of a commitment to cutting down food waste, a mission driven by the fact that one third of all food is thrown away. Meanwhile, swapping out some malted barley for the surplus bread also reduces the beers’ carbon footprint.
These thoughtful brewers are always looking for ways to make their processes and supply chain ever more sustainable. For instance, water that goes into the brewing is reused and recirculated where possible, while spent grain is passed on to local farmers.
Beyond the beers, Cotswold Lakes Brew Co. also creates impact locally by contributing funding and volunteering hours to the Cotswolds Lakes Trust, supporting the conservation of their beautiful corner of the world.
Given the variety and the fact that all are gluten-free and most are vegan – you’re sure to find a new fave beer in the range.
