Smallholder Black is a black tea produced in collaboration between Satemwa and the small family farms in the neighbourhood. The tea is fully oxidized and gives a rich, roasted, chesnut, rounded sweet flavour.

Character: Progressive, Deep, Surprising

Ingredients: Black loose-leaf tea

Cultivation and Certification: Conventional (pesticide-free, with herbicide use) Fair Trade, UTZ+ and Rain Forest Alliance Certified

Brewing instructions: Brew one spoonful or 2-4 grams using western style, 3-4 min, 90- 95°C/ 195 203°. For cold brew use 8-10 grams per litre, store 8 hours in fridge.

Meet Jonas Makata, one of Satemwa’s 198 independent smallholder tea farmers who work with the newly developed tea variety in partnership with Satemwa. Jonas has 1 hectare of tea and he has grown tea since 1976. He is married, has 5 children but lost count of how many grandchildren they have. Two of his children are still depending on him and what he makes from the tea sales. Jonas gets a better price for his hand-plucked green leaf, which is processed on Satemwa’s factory and shares in the profit when Satemwa sells the specialty tea.

Ready to join the Tea Rebellion? If you like the sound of impeccable teas and fair pay for their producers, the answer is yes.

With a nod to the Boston Tea Party in the name, this social enterprise is using tea to protest. Their demand is simple: a more transparent, sustainable industry that works for farmers and delivers great taste to drinkers.

Tea Rebellion leads by example. Their bold and pure range is sourced from a handful of smallholders and cooperatives through direct trade, empowering farmers with fair wages and bargaining power.

This approach helps Tea Rebellion build strong and united partnerships with their producers. Together they do more than just create award-winning teas – the social enterprise also supports community initiatives that help farmers become ever-more sustainable and resilient.

Just as much time and care goes into selecting the most flavourful teas, which is why they’ve scooped no less than 21 industry awards. Whether you prefer a loose leaf or tea bags, these will take your tea appreciation to new levels.

Whichever Tea Rebellion products you end up sampling, they’ll arrive in 100% recyclable and compostable packaging.
