When in Rome is on a mission to rewrite the rules of wine – with craft Italian wines that tread lightly on the planet through innovation in packaging and viticulture.

Working with small-scale, independent producers across Italy, the brand champions transparency, sustainability and quality with every wine. Though, you won’t always find a bottle. When in Rome is leading the shift to planet-friendly ‘alt-formats’ like boxes, cans and paper bottles that generate up to 10x less carbon than heavy glass bottles. Their world-first paper bottle, which is made from 94% recycled paper, saw them shortlisted at The Grocer Gold Awards 2024.

As a certified B Corp, not to mention a Blue Earth Summit BE100 company, the brand meets high standards for social and environmental impact and is on track to reach net-zero by 2026. They work directly with low-intervention farmers who use the likes of water reservoirs and solar panels, Biochar (which improves soil health while sequestering carbon) and carbon capture during fermentation.

They’ve even brought innovation into their operations, reducing transport journeys by 75% by canning their wines in the UK. The result? Their bag-in-box Sauvignon, for example, cuts emissions by 41% compared with their glass bottle counterparts according to a lifecycle assessment by their partners at Carbon Cloud.

Whether it’s a vibrant Montepulciano or a zesty Greco, these are wines you can feel good about pouring thanks to their great taste with fewer emissions and full transparency on every label.
