About this Large Fine Weave Basket
Our fine weave baskets are crafted from extra thin sisal fibres grown on the weavers' own farms. The sisal leaves are harvested, fibres removed, dyed, and rolled into twine by the artisans, making each basket entirely handmade from start to finish. This intricate process, requiring considerable time and effort, results in a basket that is a true work of art.
Meet the Makers
This basket has been woven by the talented Margaret Mbela. Weaving baskets is an integral part of Taita culture. The artisans, mostly from the Taita hills, use traditional weaving techniques passed down through generations. These groups of weavers meet every two weeks to weave together and continue their work at home, on the bus, or while visiting neighbours. This communal activity not only preserves their cultural heritage but also supports their livelihoods.
Enhance your home decor with this striking Large Fine Weave Basket. Perfect for storage, decoration, or as a thoughtful gift, each basket is a unique creation that carries the heart and history of its maker.
By choosing these baskets, you're not only adding a touch of authentic Kenyan artistry to your home but also supporting sustainable practices and preserving a rich cultural tradition. Join us in this fair-trade journey and make a positive impact with your purchase.
Karakorum introduces you to artisans of the world and the beautiful stories behind their products. This ethical home decor brand is a joyous celebration of traditional crafts, small business and fair trade practices.
Karakorum is named after the former capital of the Moghul Empire, one of the most important cities on the Silk Road, despite its small size. Likewise, the brand is a small-but-mighty route for trade from around the world.
