Lightning Maths
Lightning Maths is the teacher-founded social enterprise helping people on a journey from maths anxiety to maths fluency. They design engaging games that make brushing up on maths and problem solving skills fun.
Lampogo 3 is the very first Lightning Maths game. Featuring cards and counters, it’s based around solving “low-threshold, high-ceiling” puzzles – that means they’re easy to learn but with lots of opportunity for deep mathematical reasoning.
Although originally designed for the classroom by teacher and board game enthusiast Roy Clutterbuck, Lampogo 3 is for people of all ages. Whether you’re seven or 70, you can test out your problem solving and build your maths confidence, getting to grips with topics like number bonds, addition and subtraction.
On top of honing your personal maths skills, buying Lightning Maths is helping make a positive impact in schools. Profits go towards sharing teaching resources for schools to use as well as a programme to support the learning of problem solving strategies.
Lightning Maths started in Roy Clutterbuck’s classroom, where he was determined to make learning maths more fun and accessible. Part of this was creating a game kids would actually be eager to play – something as far from the standard school worksheets as possible.
He came up with Lampogo 3 and it was a hit. Pupils were motivated to keep playing, even outside of lessons, and get faster at solving the puzzles. After hand-making games to share with other primary schools to begin with, Roy decided to set up a company to publish the games.
He’s managed to create a board game that’s both fun and impactful, keeping the aim of helping people engage with and learn maths at the heart of things.
