Sea Change reaches €500,000 donated to ocean conservation efforts
23/7/2024
Sea Change have been partners of Social Supermarket since 2019 – not long after we and they founded our respective businesses. This summer 2024, they’re celebrating an impressive milestone of donating half a million euros to conservation charities in a bid to help protect marine life.
Wine that helps to turn the tide on plastic pollution
Sea Change came to life in 2018 as part of family wine business, 10 International, rooted in a desire to protect the ocean. That’s why you won’t find any unnecessary plastic wrap on these wine bottles. In fact, the wine labels are innovatively made from a mix of certified sustainable paper and grape waste!
Every bottle of wine sold makes a donation to charities around the world including the likes of Ocean Generation, Olive Ridley Project and Sea-Changers UK. They all have the same mission: to help tackle the growing problem of plastic pollution and protect the animals that live in our oceans. It’s why those animals appear as illustrations on each wine label.
To date, donations have facilitated projects like the foundation of two sea turtle centres in the Maldives, the removal of 20 tonnes of plastic from the Cornish coastline and the installation of a living harbour wall in Falmouth (below), providing a home to a variety of species from seaweeds to invertebrates and fish.
Raising half a million euros for ocean conservation charities
Small actions can have a big impact. It’s a belief that Sea Change and Social Supermarket share. And the proof is in the ethical wine biz’s recent announcement: Sea Change’s charity donations have now reached the stellar €500,000 mark.
Of this milestone, Toby Hancock, Simon Rolfe and Ian Hanley, Directors at 10 International, said: “As Directors of Sea Change Wine, we are absolutely delighted to have reached this incredible milestone in such a short period of time. We’re hugely proud of our achievement and delighted for our charity partners. However, we remain keenly aware of the environmental challenges that lie ahead for the planet and are committed to carrying on providing consumers with a range of wines that offer a brighter future for our ocean.”
By embedding a charity donation into the business model, Sea Change has been able to affect real change. Helen Webb MBE, Co-Founder of Sea Change’s UK charity partner, Sea-Changers says of the latest news: “Congratulations on this fantastic milestone, which is not just a reflection of financial generosity but also proof of how a business with a strong environmental commitment and values can impact on many communities’ ability to respond and create environmental change.”
She continues, “Our partnership with Sea Change Wine has allowed us to support transformative projects across the UK and provide grant opportunities for a huge range of conservation and research projects – many of which simply would not have taken place without our funding. Thank you for every contribution that joins us in this mission.”
Helping Sea Change reach new heights
It’s been a delight to help Sea Change to reach more people and make more of a difference through the Social Supermarket ecosystem, and the feeling’s mutual according to Rolfe and his fellow co-directors.
“Our collaboration with Social Supermarket has enhanced our product offerings and helped us reach a larger audience, which in turn has boosted our growth and our environmental and charitable impact,” he says. “Together, we’ve amplified our efforts to make a positive difference, ensuring that our success directly translates into meaningful support for our planet.”
Sea Change’s eco-friendly wines regularly feature as favourites among our corporate gifts, events catering and our popular Christmas hamper range, as well as being available to buy in wine gift boxes or by the case. It’s no surprise, seeing as every bottle tastes as good as the impact it delivers. (So much so, that our co-founder, Alex, even served up these wines at his own wedding in 2022.)
Over the years, we’ve helped the mission-driven wine challenger get closer to this fantastic milestone by working together on new seasonal launches. Think half bottles of wine that we incorporated into our smaller Christmas gift boxes. There’s also been Prosecco by the can, which has proven perfect for summer picnics and events like Wimbledon. Meanwhile, we continue to champion Sea Change Free, a non-alcoholic sparkling wine which makes this a more inclusive proposition, not to mention the perfect addition to our gifting range.
More waves of change on the horizon
As for what’s next? To help Sea Change to reach the next big milestone of €1 million donated, we will be including their wines in our 2024 Christmas hamper range. There’ll be some of our favourite Sea Changes wines, Prosecco and the non-alcoholic sparkling wine. Our newsletter subscribers will be the first to hear of the new festive range and be able to pre-order.
