Happy Earth Day! Ideas on how to take action

22/4/2020

Today (22nd April) is Earth Day! So what is Earth Day?

Earth day’s mission is to build the world’s largest environmental movement to drive transformative change for people and planet. The aim is to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide.

It grew out of the first Earth Day in 1970 and has been growing every since, now entering its 50th year. The organisation behind it is now working with more than 75,000 partners in over 190 countries to drive positive action for our planet.

They believe that as an individual, you yield real power and influence as a consumer, a voter, and a member of a community that can unite for transformational change!

Here at Social Supermarket, we are hugely aligned to Earth Day and the values they stand for as so many of them are found in our wonderful social enterprise brands. Given this, we thought we’d share some simple ways to take action and help make the world a cleaner place:

1. Reduce food waste in your home – some of our amazing brands such as Rubies in the Rubble and Toast Ale are doing exactly this.

2. Adopt a more plant based diet… even if it’s just doing Meat Free Mondays (Jamie Oliver has plenty of excellent recipes if you’re looking for inspiration).

3. Say goodbye to fast fashion – shop in charity shops or sustainable brands who can prove their supply chain is sustainable – we have a selection of ethical clothing which are perfect all year round.

4. Switch to an eco friendly electricity provider – Money Supermarket has a good guide on this here.

5. Reduce your single use plastics – carry a reusable water bottle or your own cutlery – you’ll soon realise how much money you are saving as well as plastic.

6. Use greener products in your home – simple swaps can be made for more sustainable cleaning products & beauty products etc. Check out our blog on UpCircle beauty, who can help you make positive product switches, here

Maybe try to make a resolution to do one of these things, it’s the smaller swaps that can make a real difference.
