With a belief that batteries die, but products don't have to, gomi designs innovative technology crafted from materials that would otherwise end up in landfill. Their speakers, power banks and wireless chargers turn everyday 'non-recyclable' plastics and second-life lithium batteries into consumer tech products that people are proud to display.
Every gomi speaker is made from the equivalent of 44 plastic bags, while the durable outer shell for the power banks is made from flexible plastics like bubble wrap and food packaging – repurposing some of the 300 million kilograms that the UK throws away every year.
From their studio in Brighton's Lanes, gomi's team of designers and sound technicians handcraft every product, recognisable by the signature swirling marbled design (of which no two are the same). Power comes from healthy, second-life batteries sourced from damaged e-bikes and tested – so they're just as good as new. This circumvents the humanitarian issues associated with mining for new lithium, as well as stopping would-be waste from ending up in landfill, meaning gomi products have a carbon footprint more than 50% lower than their mass produced counterparts. A "repairs for life" pledge means this studio practises what they preach around circularity, too.
Their eye for turning throw-away culture on its head has captured the imaginations of iconic brands such as Paul Smith, Vans and Chilly's, for whom they've created limited collections.
