Tony's Chocolonely
Taking a bite of Tony’s Chocolonely is a vote for a fairer chocolate industry, helping farmers get the pay they deserve and ending modern slavery on farms.
Unwrap a bar of Tony’s Chocolonely and you’ll see the pieces are unequally divided. That’s not a random choice – it reflects the chocolate world, which is unequal in a huge way.
The supply chain starts with millions of farmers, whose cocoa beans are used to keep billions of hungry chocolate eaters satisfied. Yet it’s a handful of chocolate giants who reap the profits, by keeping the price of cocoa as low as possible.
Farmers are left in poverty, sadly leading to illegal child labour and modern slavery. Tony’s Chocolonely exists to shake up the system and campaign for a fairer chocolate world, free from this kind of exploitation.
They’re leading by example. All Tony’s Chocolonely chocolate is made from beans sourced using responsible principles like the need for traceable beans, a commitment to long-term partnerships with farm cooperatives and paying premium prices. And they campaign to get peers in the industry to follow these principles too.
As part of their mission, sales of Tony’s funds the Chocolonely Foundation, which empowers cocoa farmer communities and supports projects creating a slave-free chocolate industry.
We should also mention, Tony’s Chocolonely tastes incredible. Discover exciting flavours as well as classics inside their colourful, Willy Wonka-worthy wrappers.
While reporting on illegal child labour and modern slavery on cocoa farms in West Africa, Dutch journalist Teun van de Keuken pulled a stunt to raise awareness of the issue. He ate a pile of chocolate bars on his TV show and turned himself in to the Dutch authorities as a chocolate criminal.
Alongside trying to convince a judge to prosecute him, Teun took a crack at creating a Fairtrade and 100% slave-free chocolate bar – the original Tony’s Chocolonely. It turned out to be a huge hit and the brand grew from here.
The name came about because Teun felt like the only person in the industry shouting about the need to eradicate slavery on cocoa farms. And Tony is the English translation of Teun. Hence Tony’s Chocolonely!
