Equal Exchange
You’re invited to buy into Equal Exchange’s philosophy of building a better food system. An environmentally and socially just one, that works for both farmers and citizen-consumers.
Living up to the name, Equal Exchange sources its organic coffee, chocolate, olive oil, honey, sugar and wholefoods directly from more than 40 farmers cooperatives around the world.
They also collaborate on innovative programmes with their partner co-operatives, from crop diversification to women’s leadership development. The latter is in keeping with their wider commitment to championing female farmers, exemplified by the Grown by Women coffee range.
Just as the co-ops they buy from are democratically organised, sharing resources and decision-making among their members, so is the Equal Exchange business. They share the same co-operative model, with each worker-owner having an equal share and vote in how things are run.
Whether you’re brewing yourself one of the rich coffees or unwrapping a bar of the flavourful dark chocolate, take it as a chance to celebrate your support for a more equitable, democratic and sustainable future.
Originally Campaign Coffee Scotland, a rebrand in 1990 established Equal Exchange, with the business also becoming a workers co-operative at this time.
Meanwhile, across the pond a fellow fair trade company was doing similar business – coincidentally under the same name. In more recent years, Equal Exchange was absorbed by its US counterpart, with the two now united in the same co-op structure.
Leading the helm today at Equal Exchange is co-owner Joshua Pitts, who directs the UK business, sales and accounts.
