Our guide to having a more purposeful picnic this National Picnic Week

17/6/2021

Monday 21st – Sunday 27th June is National Picnic Week, so we’ve been thinking about how to make it a more purposeful, planet-friendly one.

There’s a couple of ways to get involved…

Jump to Purposeful picnic hampers | Order direct to the picnic blanket | Win a free picnic Cleaning up

Two women cheers over a picnic hamper while sat on a picnic blanket. They're surrounded by food and are shot overhead, bird's eye view.

Buy a more purposeful picnic hamper

Every picnic hamper and gift box we sell is packed full of social enterprise products. Each item comes from a brand that prioritises their social and/or environmental mission.

Like One Gin whose premium gins and pre-mixed G&T cans fund life-changing water projects. Or Liberation Nuts – the UK’s first farmer-owned nut company. It’s Fairtrade too, and their chilli & lime nut cocktail is particularly popular for being as more-ish as it is impactful for farmers’ livelihoods.

But that’s not all. This summer 2021, we’ve committed to donating 5% of all sales on our picnic hampers to two amazing charities – Hubbub and Keep Britain Tidy. Environmental charity Hubbub plans campaigns that help to lift the lid on what’s going on with us and our planet and change behaviours when it comes to choosing more sustainable lifestyles. Read all about their Treasure Your River campaign, not to mention their tips for making sure your picnic litter doesn’t end up as ocean pollution.

A woman shot overhead, bird's eye view collects litter next to a park bin

We’re calling on Londoners to #litterpickforpicnics and have a whopping 80 free picnic boxes to give away.

If you show us you’ve cleaned up the park or a local green space, no matter how small an amount of rubbish, we want to reward your efforts.

How to enter:

  1. Show us you’ve gone on a litter pick or cleared up rubbish from a green space
  2. Tag us @thesocialsupermarket on Instagram in your picture, GIF, Stories, Reels or whatever format you like (just make sure your account’s public so we can see it!)
  3. Use the hashtag #litterpickforpicnics on the post
  4. Winners will get a DM from us to claim your freebie

The more creative image the better! But ultimately, this is about promoting the idea of taking care of our local parks and green spaces.

Every freebie box will contain treats from One Gin, Liberation Nuts, Dash Water and Boundless Activated Snacking. Plus, a Seep compostable bin bag to clear away after yourself should you wish to enjoy your free goodies in the park.

FYI, an alcohol-free freebie box is also available.

Competition closes on *EDIT* Sunday 4th July at 11.59pm BST.

If your park bin is full, take it with you

After enjoying nature and a bite to eat, cleaning up after yourself is key. That’s why our freebie picnic boxes contain a bin bag from Seep.

But what if the bin’s full? Overflowing public bins mean that weather and wildlife can take litter far from its intended drop-off point. And even make it into our rivers and oceans, becoming plastic pollution.

Better to pack up your keepsake picnic hamper with all of your empties and recycle them properly at home.

Check out Hubbub’s tips for making sure your litter doesn’t end up swimming with the fishes.
